Face Masks 2.0
It’s been many months since we initially shared our page of patterns, tutorials, and tips for making fabric face masks. As it becomes a part of our reality and folks are looking for more comfortable masks or just ones that fit them a bit better, we decided that maybe it’s time to revise our mask page. Give the Gift of a Lap Blanket to a Hospice Patient
In 2020, we at Discount Fabric Warehouse have teamed up with Hawai’i Care Choices (previously known as Hospice of Hilo) to collect homemade lap blankets to be included in care packages for new Hospice patients. Since then, we’ve collected hundreds of wonderfully crafted blankets for donation. We appreciate all of the care and love that has gone into each and every one of the blankets that we have been able to pass on to Hawai’i Care Choices.
This year’s Lap Blanket Drive has arrived! Through August 31, 2022, we will be collecting homemade lap blankets for donation. You will receive a $5 Discount Fabric Warehouse gift certificate for each donation as a thank you for your generosity.
If you and your group would like to host a sewing party to create blankets for donation, please let us know. We will provide the space, machines, and materials. You just need to provide the instruction for those who need it and the enthusiasm to make the blankets. All blankets will be donated at the end of the session. For more information, please contact your nearest Discount Fabric Warehouse store to discuss availability.
We hope to continue to be able to provide Hawai’i Care Choices with beautiful blankets for their Hospice patients in the coming years. If you or someone you know has ever had a loved one in Hospice, you know that a small thing like a homemade blanket can make a big difference. We hope that you’ll share your sewing or crafting talents with us and contribute a blanket or two.

Easy Baby Blanket
Okay, so you don’t only have to make a baby blanket using this quick tutorial. You can also make a lap blanket for an adult. Or a nap blanket for a kiddo. It’s a pretty versatile project! These blankets can be whipped up in no time at all with just a couple of yards of fabric!

As the new school year looms closer, parents, guardians, and teachers have begun to start thinking of how the current pandemic will impact classrooms. There is an increased need for keiki (child) sized face masks as many kids have been cooped up at home or at a close family friend or relative’s house since their last day at school.
Throughout the month of August and into September, Discount Fabric Warehouse will be collecting keiki face masks for donation to schools across the state. For the Big Island, the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center as well as representatives from various schools will be handling distribution. We are currently still working on finding contacts on the other islands to assist with getting the masks where they are needed.

One of the many ways you can help is to make fabric face masks. We all have fabric stashes at home that we can break into or even that scrap basket. Many of the mask patterns out there don’t call for very much fabric and are a quick sew. We’ve collected some patterns and tutorials for you here to get you started. However, if you are planning on sewing masks for a specific organization, you may want to check with them ahead of time to ensure that you are meeting their specifications.

Beach Towel Bag
Summer is approaching and the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center is asking for help to make this summer a memorable one for their young clients. This year we are creating draw string beach towel bags that are perfect for the pool or the beach. This beach towel bag is a great project to make year-round in Hawaii.
How You Can Help
Instructions for this project are coming soon. You’ll need a towel (a standard bath towel works fine and comes in a variety of colors to match your fabric), some cotton fabric, and a bit of time since this can be a bit of a confusing project at first. This project is a great project to use with larger scraps since it doesn’t take a ton of fabric, but can also help you go through your stash.
